Career Step is attempting to streamline their medical billing student training and has announced the release of a new program designed to have students ‘workplace ready’ in just a few months.

In a recent press release, COO Mark Thomas who is the executive leading the development said the following:

“The launch of our Medical Billing program is very exciting as it is a natural follow-on to our AHIMA-approved medical coding training. Medical billing and medical coding are often inter-related careers, and our experience in the inpatient and outpatient medical coding fields provides a training perspective that helps us prepare Medical Billing students with exactly the skills they need to succeed.”

The investment being made by companies such as Career Step and campus Colleges into medical billing and coding education and training is indicative of the rapid growth in the industry, with the demand for Health Information Technicians estimated to increase by 21% over the current decade (equating to an additional $37,000 new jobs).

As would be expected with medical billing courses, the program assists students in the development of essential career skills in the healthcare reimbursement industry. Developed with the assistance of experienced billers and coders, the curriculum includes core practices including payment processing, billing collections, payer management and workplace communication.

The Billing Program involves 145 hours but can be completed in just three months. Adopting an online format, the course enables students to take advantage of distance learning and commence their enrolment at any time. The program will include access to instructors and support from graduates, providing community appeal and contacts within the industry.

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a proposed rule (as distinct from a final rule) that would establish a unique health plan identifier under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The proposed rule has caused a stir in the Medical Billing and Coding industry. Whilst the rule would implement several administrative simplification provisions of the Affordable Care Act, most notably it would also involve pushing back the deadline for the ICD-10.

The new medical-coding standard was scheduled to become effective in 2013, but faces a one year delay under the proposed rule.

The imputed benefit in the delay is the estimated $4.6 billion saving under the proposal as part of the federal health-care overhaul. Also cited has been the need for a smooth transition to the new code sets.

The iteration of the disease-classification system (ICD-10) is an update of diagnosis and procedure codes widely implemented in the medical billing industry and would significantly expand the number of code sets in use by medical billers – up to 140,000.

Social commentary in response to the proposal appears divided, some being critical of the inability of the Obama government for its inability to implement a system currently in use in less developed countries, with others acknowledging the need for time to ensure a smooth transition.

The proposed rule can be accessed at www.ofr.gov/inspection.aspx
